Great Journeys

For some people¹ planning a trip is almost as exciting as doing it; sitting down with books on exotic locations and picking where you want to go is a thrill, but when you first look all the places you can visit, it can be pretty overwhelming. This section of my website collects some of the more interesting places I've visited and presents them as suggested itineraries.

The following journeys aren't intended to be all-singing, all-dancing tours, but simply indications as to what's possible. They generally follow the routes I took myself, so at least someone has done them already, but it's best to allow yourself as much time as possible so you can add in your own dream destinations. After all, that's the whole point!

Australia

  Traversing the country from north to south, this journey takes in the amazing sights of the central Australian outback.

Cyprus

• Southern Cyprus
  From mountains to beaches, this journey explores the atmosphere, the history and the beauty of southern Cyprus.

The Gambia

• River Gambia
  Small but perfectly formed, the shape of the Gambia is defined by the river that bears its name, as it flows from colonial slave posts to beautiful beaches.

Ghana

• South Coast
  From colonial slave forts and paradise beaches to relaxing Rastafarians and trippy stilt villages, the south coast of Ghana is an amazing destination.

India

• Central India
  Hot and dusty, the centre of India is home to the some of the most stunning monuments man has ever created.

• East Coast
  The east coast of India is relatively off the tourist trail, but it has some gems for the more adventurous traveller.

• Northern India
  This journey includes some of the classic sights of the subcontinent but manages to stay relatively tourist-free.

• Northwest India
  Visiting the sights of Rajasthan, this journey includes some of the most evocative destinations India has to offer.

• Southern India
  Starting and ending in Chennai, this journey takes in the amazing sights of the southern tip of India.

• Western India
  Relatively unexplored, this journey covers everything from beautiful honeymoon spots to ship-breaking yards.

Indonesia

• Nusa Tenggara
  The islands of Nusa Tenggara are easy to explore and are home to some of the most amazing sights in the world.

• Sulawesi
  Relatively off the tourist trail, the island of Sulawesi is astounding, from its animist cultures to its stunning islands.

Malaysia

• West Coast
  From the oldest rainforest in the world to its colourful colonial history, Malaysia is simply a travellers' delight.

Mali

• River Niger
  Floating through the Sahara Desert on the River Niger is an incomparable experience, as is visiting the fabled town of Timbuktu and the amazing mud mosque of Djenné.

Morocco

• Sahara Desert
  The rocks of the hammada and the dunes of the Sahara may be inhospitable, but the sights and sounds are simply stunning.

Nepal

• Annapurna Circuit
  Trekking among some of the highest mountains in the world, the Annapurna Circuit is both accessible and challenging.

New Zealand

• North Island
  Trek through active volcanic areas and visit luscious beaches, while luxuriating in the North Island's relaxed cities.

• South Island
  Experience some of the most accessible yet rugged trekking in the world, from rainforests to mountains to glaciers.

Senegal
